Walk to School http://www.walktoschool.org.uk/content/our_events.php normally takes place in May every year in the UK.It is a scheme to try and encourage children to walk to their school rather than be driven by car.

It is a good idea.Its a good idea to encourage children and parents to walk to school.Yet if we want to encourage walking to school we must give the parents the security that it is safe to walk to school.

Parents drive to school for various reasons.One of those reasons is actually fear.They feel it is safer for their children to be driven to school as walking to school isn’t safe!

We can undestand parents concern.In the 21st Century nearly every household has two,even three cars.Cars are built for speed and no longer are gears used to slow down a car.Its easy to go from 1st gear to 5th.Cars that are going at 40mph feel as if they are going at 10mph.Its a different world.

So what we need to do first is to make it safe.We need to do this by making sure all our schools have safety measures.We need to provide the schools with safe crossings,speeds outside schools should be reduced to at least 20mph compulsary.We should have safe routes to schools,better cycle lanes.We should become pedestrian friendly once again.

This is the only way to get the children walking to school all year around and not just one week in a year.These schemes are good but they don’t tackle the real issues.Firstly #makeitsafe and KIDS CROSS SAFELY is a campaign that wants to do this.
