After years of opening up the school grounds, my child’s primary school recently erected 1.8m perimeter fences and electric gates as a ‘child protection’ measure. It now resembles a secure unit. I, and many other parents felt this money would have been better spent on a decent traffic controls outside the school. Likelihood of children being abducted from within school grounds: minimal. Number of children at risk from traffic: significant.

in Germany they have got it right as the speed limits are 20mph in all residental, 30mph in less residental areas. so where ever the children are walking they are a lot safer the crossings are brilliant it is a very pedestrian and cyclist orientated country and the uk could learn from some of there systems.

We have a problem with parking and cars going far too fast, and in a lot of cases it is mum’s rushing to school. It is only a matter of time before their is a serious incident. x Sadie
